Venezuela: Thieves steal zoo animals for food

According to reports, Venezuelan authorities are investigating the theft of animals from a zoo in western state of Zulia. Two collared peccaries, which are similar to boars in appearance, were stolen over the weekend, police reportedly said. “What we presume is that they (were taken) with the intention of eating them,” Luis Morales, a police official reportedly said. Reportedly, the country is reeling under food shortages amid protests by the opposition.

Melbourne named world's most liveable city for 7th consecutive year

Economist’s annual global liveability survey reportedly named Australia’s Melbourne city as the most liveable city in the world for the 7th consecutive year. Austria city Vienna and Canadian city Vancouver followed as the top three. Meanwhile, Syrian city Damascus, followed by Nigeria’s Lagos and Libyan city Tripoli were rated the world's least liveable cities.

107-year-old Ethiopian man marries 33-year-old woman

According to reports, a man in Ethiopia, who claims to be 107 years old, has married a 33-year-old woman. The man with 108 children and grandchildren, Hajji Abdulkadir Dekema, wed his bride Furo Guyo in a wedding ceremony during the weekend, say reports. Dekema says he plans to have more children from his latest wife despite his advanced age.

According to a survey taken around Indonesia, Unmarried people are happier than those who are married. The composite measure which took into account factors such as life satisfaction and meaning of life also found Indonesian men happier than the country's women. A positive correlation between social satisfaction and age was also found.

Visitors at an aquarium in Japan were stunned when a giant stingray devoured its tank mate, a helpless squid. The stingray cornered the squid against the glass of the tank and chomped it down. The squid emits blue-black ink and desperately tries to free itself from the giant. In the end, the small squid disappeared into the stingray’s mouth.

Bat that looks like YODA is officially recognised as a new species

According to reports, a bat from the rainforests of Papua New Guinea, which supposedly holds a resemblance to the 'Star Wars' character 'Yoda' has been officially recognised as a new species. It was first discovered in 2011. Scientists have christened it the Hamamas tube-nosed fruit bat after the Papuan word for 'happy', as it has an 'enigmatic' expression and smile like 'Yoda'.

Goldfish can survive without oxygen by making alcohol

Researchers have reportedly identified that Goldfish can survive under frozen lakes without oxygen by producing alcohol.  The fish contains two sets of proteins for the breakdown of food, one with oxygen and one without. Lactic acid produced during oxygen-less respiration is converted into ethanol which diffuses into the water, preventing dangerous lactic acid build-ups.

Women have more active brains than men: Study

According to a study conducted by Amen Clinics, the brains of women are significantly more active in many areas of the brain than men. Amen Clinics compared 46,034 brain SPECT (single photon emission computed tomography) imaging studies provided by nine clinics, quantifying differences between the brains of men and women. The areas included prefrontal cortex, involved with focus and impulse control, and also the emotional areas of the brain, regulating mood and anxiety.

Real estate investor buys San Francisco street for $90,000

According to reports, a couple has bought a street in the wealthy neighbourhood of Presidio Terrace in San Francisco for $90,100. Residents may take the matter to court as they were unaware their street was put up for sale for $994 in an auction to regain unpaid back taxes. The homeowners' association had failed to pay a three-decade-old property tax.

12 inmates escaped from prison fools guard with peanut butter

According to reports, twelve inmates escaped a prison in Alabama, US after fooling a new guard with the help of peanut butter. The inmates smeared peanut butter to obscure the door numbers, following which the guard mistakenly opened a door leading out of the prison instead of the door leading to their jail cell. However, 11 of the 12 inmates have been captured.

Astonished by her brand new face, police reportedly said, “She looked in her thirties and was different from the photos we had.”

Man crashes Rs 2 crore Ferrari just an hour after buying it

In the UK, a driver crashed his Ferrari 430 Scuderia supercar in an accident after buying it just an hour before. The driver reportedly suffered just cuts and bruises after the Ferrari, priced at about Rs 2 crore, “went airborne and burst into flames”. Police believe the crash was caused due to “wet conditions” and not the car's speed.

North Korea cancels beer festival due to drought

North Korea reportedly canceled a beer festival due to a severe drought in the country. The Taedong River Beer Festival was scheduled to take place from July 26 until the end of August. “The reason for the cancellation is unclear and we don’t expect full information to be forthcoming but it is possibly down to the ongoing drought in the country that has caused a great deal of trouble”, a leading travel agency said in a statement.

Snack-seeking bear seen poking head in car window

In a video filmed Saturday at Beijing Badaling Safari World, the Asiatic bear is seen standing on its hind legs with its head in the open driver's side window. The driver then throws snacks out to the bear. When the hungry animal goes to investigate, the car speeds off, the video on Sina Weibo shows. Park officials said they have yet to confirm the incident. The incident follows an animal attack at the park in June 2016 where a woman was killed after she exited her vehicle.
