Anil Swarup, Secretary of the Department of School Education and Literacy, HRD ministry, reportedly said the Centre is set to roll out a CAT-like central evaluation system for teachers. Swarup further reportedly said, “The CAT-like evaluation will be a benchmark for teachers, but a lot will depend on discussion with the state governments. We wish to have talks with all stakeholders. Then the recruiting agencies will decide.”
Chennai Corporation on Sunday reportedly hosted a Google Forms based survey on its website about the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS). According to reports, the survey was conducted to 'understand the priorities of bus commuters.' Notably, the state transport department had earlier proposed a 96.7 km bus transit network for Chennai.
The Tamil Nadu police reportedly seized demonetized currency with the face value of Rs 90 lakh on Sunday. According to reports, the money was seized at the Koyambedu bus terminus. Two persons, Mohammed Rishad and Subeir, were reportedly arrested. Notably, last week demonetized currency with the face value of Rs. 44.7 crore was recovered from a businessman in Chennai.
Several pro-Tamil activists were reportedly detained at the Marina beach on Sunday. According to reports, the activists have gathered in the Marina to hold a memorial for Tamil victims of the Sri Lankan civil war. The police had arrested the activists as Section 41 is in force at the beach. Chennai Metro on Sunday reportedly launched its official mobile app. Notably, the move comes two years after Chennai Metro started its first run. According to reports, the app has been titled 'Chennai Metro Rail app' and is currently made available only for Android phones. Food safety and revenue officials on Friday reportedly conducted a raid on over 300 eateries in Marina beach. According to reports, the officials seized over 140kg of stale food, including rotten fish, expired ice-cream and soft drinks. Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley-led GST Council on Friday finalised the tax rates for restaurants under multiple categories. The council revealed that restaurants with an annual turnover of under Rs 50 lakh would attract only a 5% tax, while non-AC food joints will face up to 12% tax. Meanwhile, air-conditioned restaurants and fine dining restaurants with a liquor licence will come under the 18% tax slab, and a service tax rate of 28% will be accounted for at luxury and star hotels.
The Chennai Police on Thursday reportedly conducted a raid at MV Ramalingam & Co, a textile shop in Kodambakkam, Chennai. According to reports, the police seized bundles of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 demonetized notes having a face value of Rs 45 crores from the raid. Several reports have suggested that the demonetised notes belong to a jewellery shop owner in the city.
GST Council meeting will reportedly begin on Thursday where it will decide the overall taxes for Goods and Services. Chennai Metro Rail Limited has reportedly announced that it would offer 40% discount on Metro Rail tickets between May 15 and May 22. According to reports, CMRL has offered this discount to popularise the Metro Rail services in the city after the rollout of Chennai’s first underground line from Thirumangalam to Nehru Park on Sunday.

Reportedly, the ride fare for 13 stations in Mumbai is Rs 40, while the Delhi Metro charges Rs 10 for a distance of up to 2 km and up to Rs 50 to travel a stretch of more than 32 km.

Ilayaraja, who was accused of killing a teacher in Chennai, has allegedly committed suicide in the Puzhal prison on Wednesday. According to reports, Anna Nagar police had arrested Ilayaraja on Monday for killing Nivetha, who was working as a teacher at government high school in Pollachi, by ramming his car into her two-wheeler. Notably, Ilayaraja was found dead in the lavatory at the prison.
