The Chennai Metro Rail Ltd is reportedly planning to install solar power plants at its stations. According to reports, this initiative will save up to ₹1.5 crore a year in energy costs. Notably, Bengaluru-based CleanMax Solar will put up the solar panels and sell the power generated to Chennai Metro.
The Indian government on Thursday announced that GST Network, the company providing IT services for the GST, will launch two call centres on Sunday. These call centres will handle queries from taxpayers and tax officials about the GST. Notably, GSTN has partnered with Infosys and Tech Mahindra in launching these call centres.
Tamil Nadu Municipal Administration Minister S P Velumani had reportedly announced that the state is planning to build a new shopping complex in T Nagar. According to reports, the complex will be rented out to the pavement dwellers. Notably, the complex is expected to be constructed at the cost of Rs 20 crore. Velumani also announced that a new parking complex would also be built in the congested Thyagaraya Road and Thanikachalam Road at the expense of 36.50 crores.
The economic offences court in Chennai reportedly criticised AIADMK (Amma) deputy general secretary TTV Dhinakaran for not appearing before it. Dhinakaran was supposed to cross-examine the prosecution witnesses in one of his FERA (Foreign Exchange Regulation Act) cases on Thursday. Notably, Dhinakaran is currently facing two FERA violation cases.
According to reports, National Food Security Act officials of Rajasthan have painted the walls of people receiving ration, with the message “I am poor and I receive ration from NFSA.” Reportedly, around 50,000 homes are being painted with the message. Rekha Raj, a 24-year-old college student from the Andaman Islands, was reportedly found dead in her room in Vadapalani. According to reports, a friend of Rekha’s father from Pudukottai visited her on Wednesday and allegedly found her dead in the room. Notably, Rekha was studying BSc Biotechnology in a private college in Thiruninravur and was staying with her friend in the area.
Motorists in Chennai had reportedly started using the Porur flyover before its official inauguration due to heavy rains in the city. According to reports, the people in the area have said that the motorists used the flyover to avoid getting stuck in traffic. Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board will reportedly stop taking water from four reservoirs from next week. These reservoirs are Chembarambakkam, Cholavaram, Red Hills and Poondi. Water scarcity and dredging operations are reported to be the reason behind this operation. Notably, these water bodies supply nearly 65 % of the drinking water for the city. Meanwhile, Chennai Metrowater has also announced that it will bring the needed water from alternative sources in Thiruvallur and Neyveli.
According to reports, Droptaxi, a cab aggregator start-up from Bengaluru, has hired transgenders in Chennai for its promotional work. The start-up has reportedly hired seven transgenders in part-time positions to do promotional work in public places. Notably, Droptaxi has also announced that it is planning to hire transgenders in Tiruchirapalli, Coimbatore and Karnataka within this month.
Metro Rail operations in Chennai are reportedly set to be extended on Sunday for civil services examination. According to reports, CMRL has announced that services would commence from 6 am on Sunday instead of 8 am. Notably, CMRL, on its Facebook page, has posted, “To facilitate smooth conduct of Civil Services Exam, the metro rail services on 18.06.17 (Sunday) will commence from 0600hrs onwards (instead of 0800hrs). (SIC)”.
The demolition work of the fire engulfed Chennai Silks building in T Nagar has reportedly started on Saturday morning. Notably, the demolition work was stopped last week following a minor accident. The front face of the building has been brought down within minutes of starting the demolition work. The contractor has reportedly pledged that the demolition of the building will be completed before this evening. However, the removal of rubble from the demolition is expected to take more than ten days.
A few students of Pachaiyappa's College in Chennai have allegedly attacked their principal Kaliraj inside the campus on Friday. According to reports, Kaliraj, who asked the students without ID cards to leave the college campus, suffered injuries to his head and windows of his car were also broken. Notably, police have arrested the students who involved in the attack.
A study by Help Age India has revealed that Chennai people are kinder to elderly in public spaces than people in most other cities in the country. In contrast, more than 70% of elders in Bengaluru have admitted of having experienced abuse and ill-treatment in public spaces. Madhya Pradesh police on Tuesday reportedly registered a FIR against Congress legislator Shakuntala Khatik. The FIR was filed after Khatik was caught on camera inciting a mob to set fire to a police station in Karera, Madhya Pradesh. The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) in Chennai on Monday reportedly conducted a test-run using an electric bus. According to reports, the electric bus was manufactured by Ashok Leyland and called Circuit. The bus was operated between Chennai Central railway station and Lighthouse.
South Indian Actor Vijay reportedly raised his voice in support of the farmer's welfare. Speaking at Behindwoods Gold Medals 2017, Vijay said: "It is mandatory for us to address the problems of our farmers." He also stated that it is sad to watch rice producing farmers to stand outside the ration shops to procure rice.
